When the British ruled India as a colony, they took the treasure from the land, did not listen to the people, and gave themselves the privileges of royalty.  Simultaneously, they used caste, religious, and tribal differences to keep the people from organizing against the excesses of the ruling class.  Does any of this sound familiar?
