India worried over China’s new J&K line

China's current policy towards Jammu and Kashmir continues to be a major “cause for concern” for India, well-placed sources in the government said on Wednesday. Referring to the “subtle but noticeable shifts” in the Chinese position, they pointed to the danger of China emerging as a third party to the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.

China is already in possession of 38,000 sq km of the Ladakh region in J&K. Islamabad has ceded another 5,000 sq km of territory from the part of the state that is under Pakistan’s control. The latest Chinese moves in Kashmir suggest that Beijing is trying to make it a “tripartite issue”, the sources said.

In the past, Chinese position used to be similar to that of all major powers, including the United States, which viewed Kashmir as a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan that must be resolved peacefully. China’s current practice of issuing stapled visas to Kashmiris and the denial of visa to an Indian Army general serving in the state mark a “strategic shift in China’s attitude”, the sources said.
